Karen Ares: Candidate for Regional School Committtee
Karen is running to fill one of TWO open seats on the Regional School Committee Why do you want to serve in this position? I have been serving on this committee for the past year (since June 2020). I was the successful candidate of 3 interviewed to finish a year term for someone who moved away. This year has been a whirlwind with COVID and that has taken the majority of our time, rightfully so. Only having served a year, there is so much more for me to do and experience at Algonquin. As you see my qualifications below, there is much I have to offer from my experience in public education. I have the unique position of having the perspectives of many stakeholders- teachers, district administrators, school committee members, parents, and students (having 2 children currently at Algonquin Regional High School). Please- let’s not forget the students! They have voices too. When the seat opened last year, I thought it was a natural fit for me to serve my town in this capacity. What special qualifications and experience will you bring to the office? I was a high school science teacher for 7 years and a district administrator in […]
Vikram Verma: Candidate for Board of Selectmen
Vikram is running to fill one of TWO open seats on the Board of Selectmen Why do you want to serve in this position? I am interested in using my time for the service of the community of Northborough which has enabled me to nurture my family during the last 14 years. To that end I am running for Selectman in the Town of Northborough. I believe in sustainability, fiscal responsibility, following the science and being kind to nature and the environment. I think that my fair and balanced approach to issues will help in realizing the immense potential that Northborough has to offer. What special qualifications and experience will you bring to the office of Selectmen? Professionally, I have been helping the medical device industry to ensure compliance with federal and international regulations, so those devices are safe for the public. As a result, I have been trained to follow the science, be detail oriented, and ask the experts difficult questions as a lay person but at the same time support business needs while ensuring the public good. I intend to bring the same sensibility and professionalism to the issues facing our community. Describe ONE other activity or (sub)committee […]
Kristen Wixted: Candidate for Board of Selectmen
Kristen is running to fill one of TWO open seats on the Board of Selectmen. Why do you want to serve in this position? I became involved in local town issues last summer because of the warehouse situation on Bartlett Street. That experience brought to my attention that the Board of Selectmen, in my opinion, could use a strong new voice. One that considers the many smart people who live in this town and write emails to town hall, one that communicates and engages with residents. The current board, with the exception of Julianne Hirsch, frequently misses opportunities to ask questions and have engaging discussions about town issues. People who call in feel intimidated to share their perspective. If elected, I would be interested in what people have to offer, share, and request. What special qualifications and experience will you bring to the office? First, I am trained as a speech language pathologist, and have worked with very anxious groups of people in IEP meetings to come to a solution that works for everyone. If you’ve ever been to an IEP meeting, you may agree that if that isn’t a good skill for one of five people collaborating to run […]
Tom Dalton: Candidate for Board of Selectmen
Tom is running to fill one of TWO open seats on the Board of Selectmen. Why do you want to serve in this position? I was born and raised a New Englander, I am extremely proud to be here at this time. I traveled across the US and noticed systemic inequality all across the board. it ignited my passion, I realize this is due to a corrupt and disenfranchised two party system. that needs to change from the ground up. It will start with small communities coming together in word and deed. What special qualifications and experience will you bring to the office? (no answer provided) Describe ONE other activity or (sub)committee you’ve been involved with within the town. What has it meant to you and how did it shape and impact the town? (no answer provided)Describe THREE key issues/challenges facing the town and how will you address them in this role? The most important issue facing Northboro is equal housing for all i.e. elderly, disabled, and new generations. but also maintaining our history and agriculture while updating the towns infrastructure which is vital for a sustainable future. I will bring a united leadership which represents all, while personally representing the […]
Anthony Ziton: Candidate for Planning Board
Anthony is running to fill one of TWO open seats on the Northborough Planning Board. He is an incumbent. Why do you want to serve in this position? I decided to run for Planning Board 3 years ago due to the fact Northborough’s developable land is continually decreasing and I had a growing concern for how new and future development would impact Northborough and its resources. I believe in responsible development that is balanced with the neighborhoods, safe, has minimal traffic impact and does not overburden Northborough’s resources. What special qualifications and experience will you bring to the office? I have served on various Northborough boards since 2009 when I sat on the Earthworks board for 9 years. I resigned when I was elected to the Planning Board and since then have been on the Community Preservation Committee and most recently Open Space. Having served on the Planning Board for the past 3 years, I have worked closely with the town planner and fellow board members to review applications as they relate to conservation, design review, and groundwater. Also, I always refer back to the feedback from the Master Plan surveys, resident comments, and town meeting votes when considering applications. […]
Kerri Martinek: Candidate for Planning Board
Kerri is running to fill one of TWO open seats on the Northborough Planning Board. She currently serves as the board’s Chair. Why do you want to serve in this position? I’m running for re-election to the Planning Board because I love this job and our town. I don’t make money in real estate or development-related business. I do this because I want Northborough to be a place where people want to raise their families, start a business, or age in place and enjoy retirement. Since 2018, I have taken the time to research issues, study impact, listen to residents of all ages, attend trainings on planning best practices, collaborate with regional planning experts, create bylaws that protect neighborhoods, and seek out funding for solutions. If you’ve ever watched a Planning board meeting, you may notice my piles of paperwork, a dog-eared zoning bylaws book, and a sticky note system that is likely keeping Post-it in business. That’s because I spend hours preparing for each application. This job may be a volunteer job, but I take it seriously, I do the research, I come prepared, and make the best decisions that I can make on behalf of the voters who […]
Julianne Hirsh: Candidate for Board of Selectmen
Julianne is running, as an incumbent, for one of TWO open seats on the Board of Selectmen. Why do I want to serve in this position? I am running to serve as a selectman for a second term for two reasons. For the last three years I have worked hard to be prepared for every meeting and issue that has come before the selectmen. My main concern has been and will continue to be that we hear from as many people as possible when we make decisions about the town of Northborough. The second reason I am running is that I believe we are at a very important juncture in how Northborough is going to grow as a town. We have a master plan that is waiting to be implemented and this will guide some very important projects in town. We will need to put a lot of energy, time and support behind the implementation of the master plan and I would be honored to be a part of this in any way that I can. What special qualifications and experience will you bring to the office? Having served for three years on the BOS I understand the mechanisms of […]
Kathleen Howland: Candidate for Regional School Committee
Kathleen is running, as an incumbent, for one of two open seats on the Regional School Committee. Why do you want to serve in this position? I seek re-election to the Regional School Committee for Algonquin because I am passionate about education and the myriad of ways that it can lift the individual, our community and the world. I believe education to be the vehicle that can work for the common good, for diversity, equity and inclusion in our society, for finding and nurturing one’s passion, to cultivate citizenship and teach problem solving and civil discourse in the 21st century. As a college professor, I strongly believe and stand witness to the stress that students endure for their education. It is becoming rarer and rarer for a student to not identify themselves by their diagnoses of anxiety and depression. Schools have become a high pressure stakes game in the pursuit of getting into a good college (I am very much a Race to Nowhere fan). Driving content, teaching to the test, excessive memorization and sleep deprivation have all diminished the spark of joy and curiosity that I think is the essence of learning. I have stood and will continue to […]
Mariam Ibrahimi: Candidate for Regional School Committee
Why do you want to serve in this position? I grew up in Northborough and graduated from ARHS in 2019. Currently the Vice Chair of the Northborough Diversity and Inclusion Committee, I collaborate on solutions to foster a more welcoming community. I decided to run for Regional School Committee for two main reasons. First, students deserve to have their concerns heard and amplified by the School Committee. As a young person of color, I would bring valuable experience and expertise. Second, I believe the lack of diversity on the committee leaves several blind spots where we should be proactive, rather than reactive. There is a pervasive issue of bullying and racism that occurs in our schools that has not been adequately addressed. In short, I’m running because we have a good school system, but with a young and diverse perspective, it can be excellent. With my experience in local government and community engagement, I would bring valuable expertise to the committee to help make our schools even better. What special qualifications and experience will you bring to the office? I graduated ARHS in 2019 and grew up in Northborough, where I’ve become an active member of our community and local […]
Lauren Bailey: Candidate for Northborough K-8 School Committee
1) Why do you want to serve in this position? I would like to continue serving as a K-8 School Committee member because I am passionate about education and teaching. I’m seeking re-election to further the work in budget and policy that the School Committee has been involved in for the last three years. The schools have seen level funding budgets the past few years, and I’d like to focus efforts to ensure that in these fiscally challenging times, our schools are able to continue to provide a high level of education and services to our students and prepare for further growth of our programs, activities, and capital improvements. 2) What special qualifications and experience will you bring to the office? My experience as an educator for the past six years, first in private school and now in the public school setting, allows me to think through that lens and constantly ask myself how the decisions the school committee makes will impact our students, teachers, and learning outcomes. I pride myself on constantly asking questions, and will continue to do so if afforded the opportunity to serve for a second term. 3) Describe ONE other activity or (sub)committee you’ve been […]
