Following is the statement that was submitted by the candidate.
My name is Chris Covino and I am running for a seat on the Regional School Committee. I have been a lifelong resident of the Commonwealth, growing up in Shrewsbury and residing in Northborough for the past 19 years. I received a Bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, majoring in biology and biochemistry/biophysics and minoring in community and health psychology. I later earned a Master’s degree in education from Fitchburg State, majoring in science education. I currently teach high school chemistry in a neighboring community, having also spent the beginning of my career as a middle school science teacher. For the past 18 years, the practical experience I have gained while utilizing my undergraduate science background and my graduate training in math and science education has allowed me to provide meaningful science experiences for my students, both in the classroom and now, through the use of technology, into their homes. In addition to that time in the classroom, I have served as science department chair and held a variety of union roles, requiring collaboration among groups with many common, and in some cases, conflicting goals. The challenges that face our schools going forward will also require the same outside-the-box thinking and careful collaboration between many different stakeholders. We need to be responsive to the needs of the community and the needs of our schools and this requires thoughtful consideration of what those needs are. I believe I am a candidate that is able to make those difficult decisions in concert with other school committee members and stakeholders in the community.
On a more personal note, my wife Laurie is a retired state police officer (and proud stay at home mother) and our son is currently a freshman at Algonquin. I enjoy spending time outdoors and traveling with my family. Should I be elected to the Regional School Committee, it would be my first foray into public office. I believe my work experiences, educational training, and vested interest in Algonquin gives me a good foundation to help ensure support for all members of the school community to continue their well-earned reputation and successes. I’d appreciate your support in the upcoming election. Be sure to vote!
