Recreation Dept. news, reminders

The Northborough Recreation Department is back in the game. Spring and summer programs are filling up quickly.  Here are a few notes:

  • The Parks and Recreation Commission is holding a public hearing on Tuesday, April 6 at 7 pm. This meeting is a public hearing for the Assabet Park Construction.  View the agenda.
  • The Community Gardens on Valentine Road are expanding with ten new plots being added thanks to an Eagle Scout project. Thirty plots were created in 2013. View information on the website. An application is required. Each plot is $30/season.
  • Ellsworth-McAfee Park pavilion rental is back this summer. Permits were not issued last year because gatherings outside were not allowed. A permit issued by the Recreation Department is required for gatherings or parties. The permit fee for residents is $50/4 hours; non-residents, $65/4 hours. View information on the website.
  • Assabet Park will be closed when construction begins in July.  Also closed this season is the Splash Pad as the area would not be safe with the construction happening so close by.
  • Reminders for Ellsworth-McAfee Park use – no bikes, scooters or roller blades are allowed on the walking track. People of all ages use this track and the Recreation Department wants everyone to feel safe while walking or running. There have been incidences of bikes colliding with older people. The good news is that the new and improved Assabet Park will have a bike riding area.
  • The Recreation Department reminds all dog walkers using the town fields and recreation areas to ensure that their dog is leashed and that owners clean up after their dogs. Remember, the kids use these fields for a lot of spring and summer sports and no one wants dog poop on their shoes.
