The kindergartners and first graders at the Fitzgerald Community School are excited to announce the Northborough Community Fridge, named The Friend Fridge, is now officially available to help those in need. The project idea was initiated after a classroom discussion about food insecurity.
The fridge is located outside of the Northborough Food Pantry at 37 Pierce Street and is available 24/7. Individuals in need can take food items, which have generously been donated by individuals and businesses in the area.
Donations can be brought directly to the fridge. Items needed include whole foods, produce, breads, dairy and frozen items. Raw meat cannot be accepted, and donors are asked to please check expiration dates. Also needed are shelf stable goods and canned goods.
If you know of someone in need, such as a homebound senior citizen, you are encouraged to pick up items for them.
Students have worked on every aspect of this project for months, including fundraising, writing letters for donations, and designing the fridge logo. They applied skills, such as math and writing, and learned new skills throughout the process.
Grocery store gift cards only can be mailed to The Fitzgerald Community School K-1, 261 Main Street, Northborough MA 01532. Additional information on the project and updates on items needed can be found on Facebook.
