Northborough is upgrading water meter cellular transmitters

The Town of Northborough Department of Public Works (DPW) will be upgrading all current ultrasonic water meters from 3G cellular transmitters to new 5G cellular transmitters. This will require a DPW employee access to your home for about 15 minutes. All COVID-19 protocols will be followed.

Please make an appointment online.

In 2015 – 2016 the DPW replaced all aging mechanical water meters with new ultrasonic meters with cellular transmitters, which greatly increased their accuracy and expanded reporting capabilities.

The industry standard cellular transmitters used at that time communicated over the 3G cellular network. Wireless cellular network carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T Mobile, etc.) announced earlier this year that they will “sunset” support of the 3G network on December 31, 2022.  This announcement requires the Town to upgrade all current 3G cellular transmitters to new 5G cellular transmitters.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the DPW Office at 508-393-5040 ext.6 or dpw@town.northborough.ma.us.
