Northborough Exposure is a Blog from local photographer Joyce Maranto. It is a blog about everyday people that we meet in the course of daily life in and around our town. It combines some snippet of their lives with Joyce’s powerful portrait imagery, in hopes of creating new bonds within this community.
There are a few local places where I am almost guaranteed to run into someone I know. The grocery store has a 97% track rating and unfortunately, it is the place where I always look my worst. It is my post-gym errand spot and I look like I’ve just come off the set of Survivor. Not a good look.
Also on the list are a few local restaurants like Romaine’s. My husband and I eat there regularly and we always see friends, colleagues, coaches, teachers, etc. We’ve enjoyed countless celebrations in their beautiful private function area. It is the Who’s Who of dinner dining. With 18 years at their Northborough location, I asked owner Erin Romaine what she believes is the key to success in a tough industry. The answer came easily, “Consistency. People come to us over and over because they know the menu and they can be certain that it will meet their expectation every time.” Romaine’s keeps a base menu of very popular dishes and rotates in seasonal items. It is not uncommon for ‘regulars’ to order the same entrée over and over.
Also key to their success is a great staff and very low employee turnover. Andrea has been a server for 8 years. Her favorite work day is Saturday because “Everyone is relaxed and out for a good time. It’s such great energy.” Her constant smile is infectious and it is clear that she loves her job and her employers. The strong bond among the owners and the staff is evident and not something you find in chain restaurants.
So, if you see me at the grocery store looking down, it is only because I’m begging not to be seen. But at Romaine’s, it’s about good food, a fine cocktail, and good times with friends. I hope to see you there supporting local business.
Shout out if You are a ‘Romaine’s Regular’?
