What resolution should I look for in a TV?
The newest technology is the 4K resolution. Which is 4 times the resolution of 1080p. It increases the image from 2 million pixels to 8 million pixels. These TVs are quickly coming down in price, and are the most future-proof TVs you can buy at this time.
What is the refresh rate, and does it matter?
Refresh rate referrs to how frequently the image is refreshed. This is measured in hertz. Most tv’s have a refresh rate from 60HZ to 240HZ. 120 Hz is acceptable for most images.
What’s the difference between LCD, LED, OLED, and Plasma — and what should I choose?
LED is the prominent technology used in all flat panel HD TV’s. They are actually LCD TV’s using LED technology. (Previously, LCD TVs used CCFL flouroscesnt lamps, which is an older technology.) LED (Light emitting diode) is a smaller, brighter and more efficient lighting technology. OLED is a newer technology. The name stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. The most basic difference between LED and OLED is that each pixel provides its own illiumination, while all the pixels in an LCD are illiuminated by a LED backlight.
You can’t go wrong with either an LED or OLED tv.
Plasma was also an old technology HDTV that used a gas to display the image. You won’t find these TVs in stores anymore.
Are all TVs the same in terms of sound?
Usually higher class model TV’s will upgrade their speakers and improve sound technology, however many people are not satisfied because thes speakers tend to be located under bezel facing the floor. If top notch sound is important to you, consider purchasing a sound bar.
Better to get a smart TV, or a device like Roku or AppleTV (or both)?
Many TV manufacturers are making the majority of their TVs “Smart”. Depending on the manufacturer, they have different operating systems, Google, Android, Apple, Roku etc. Regardless, they will all allow you the ability to stream your favorite streaming applications—including Netflix, Amazon Prime, HULU, and much more. If you want more out of a TV than just watching cable, then a Smart TV is the way to go.
Best time to buy?
All manufacturers will produce entry level models within each size class with attractive price points. The best time to purchase is when the old models get clearanced in the spring. The best promotions of the year are typically 4th of July and Black November.
