The Library was established on April 8, 1868 at the home of Cyrus Gale, Sr, when the first Trustees meeting was held. Originally located in a room in the old Town Hall on Main Street, the Library quickly outgrew that space and moved to its current location at 34 Main Street when the new Gale Library Building, built on $30,000 in funds, including the land donated by the family of Cyrus Gale, Jr., opened to the public on June 12, 1895.
Today, the Library has grown to more than 26,000 square feet, including a modern two-story addition which opened in 2009, and welcomes nearly 130,000 people through its doors each year. The Library loans more than 190,000 items annually and is noted for the quality of its programs and services for children, teens and adults. More information is available on the library website.
