  • Farm Girl on the Front Lines: Deborah Sampson’s Secret. Wednesday, March 8, 7-8 p.m. in the Library Meeting room. The event is suitable for ages 7+. Families are welcome and registration is not required. Discover secrets behind a 200-year-old deception that has roots in Massachusetts! The instigator is the state’s lifelong resident Deborah Sampson. Deborah is the only woman known to have disguised herself as a man and serve as a soldier in the Continental Army without getting caught! She is coming to the Northborough Free Library to reveal her adventurous life’s story. Explore details of close calls, mountainous obstacles, and head-scratching conundrums this heroine faced as a poor Colonial farm girl, who without support from family or friends, risked humiliation and imprisonment to help the colonies become a country. You will gain a behind-the-scenes look at this principled deception and the character of the humble rebel who pulled it off. Deborah will be portrayed by Janet Parnes, principal at Historical Portrayals by Lady J, Millis.
