Meteorological spring has arrived, bringing with it changing temperatures, windy days and daylight savings time.
Some things to do as you await the Spring Equinox on March 21:
- Cut branches of forsythia, pussy willow and quince and bring them indoors. Place them in a vase of warm water, preferably in a window that gets sun, and within two weeks, you will have blooms.
- Daffodils, Muscari, and even daylillies, irises and sedums are beginning to peek through the mulch. No need to worry if we have colder temps or even a little snow. While their green leaf tips may yellow a bit, the flowers will be just fine when it is bloom time.
- Houseplants are also awakening with the longer daylight hours. Over the next month, consider repotting in fresh soil, and if roots seem potbound, move the plant into the next size up pot. Add a diluted fertilizer every two weeks to aid in their growth spurt. If you notice wilted leaves, you may be watering too much; leaf drop can signal fluctuating temperatures.
