January kids’ programs at the library announced

The Northborough Library Children’s Department has announced it’s programming for January 2022. The schedule continues to bring favorites and new programs and events. Online registration is required for most programs. The library respectfully asks that you wear a mask and/or practice social distancing while participating in in-person events. Follow the Library on Facebook and Instagram. SPECIAL PROGRAMS

  • Family Minute to Win It: Tuesday, December 28, 3-4 p.m. (meeting room). Families will have one minute to complete various simple challenges and rise up the leaderboard. The winning family will take home a small prize. Grown ups and kids are encouraged to participate together. Best suited for families with elementary aged children. Space is limited and registration is required.
  • Noon Year’s Eve Party: Thursday, December 30, 10-10:30 a.m. (meeting room). Ring in the New Year in style! Share some New Year stories, play silly games and do a fun craft. Then count down to noon with us to ring in the New Year with a big balloon drop. Space is limited; registration is required.
  • Fostering Health Body Image in a Body Shaming World: Tuesday, January 11, 6:30-8:00 p.m. (meeting room). Join Dr. Caryn Bellow, licensed clinical psychologist and community educator, to explore the realities of raising children in a world that focuses so much on body image. Learn several strategies to build healthy body image in your children, from limiting media exposure to shifting conversations away from societal stereotypes. Q&A session available at the end of the program. Registration is required.
  • Give Back Craft: Make a Cat Toy: Friday, January 14, 3-4:30 p.m. Come make a cat toy to bring home to your pet or leave it to be donated to a local animal shelter. The program is best suited to elementary-aged children. Registration is required.
  • Mindfulness Workshop for Tweens & Teens: Monday January 24, 31, 7-8 p.m. Are your kids stressed out and need some time to unwind but not sure where to start? Kids ages 10-16 are invited for this 2-week workshop to learn mindfulness and meditation techniques. Yoga and mindfulness teacher Caitlin Borsini will take them through the basics of relaxation, including stretches, breathing exercises, journaling and more. Registration is required and covers both weeks.

MONDAYS

  • Lego Club: January 10, 3-5 p.m. Kids can free-built or complete the challenge of the week. Registration is required.

TUESDAYS

  • Alphabits Storytime: January 4, 11, 18, 25, 10-10:30 a.m. Storytime for children ages 3-5 to promote literacy, develop classroom skills and develop familiarity with the alphabet. Each week, the focus will be on a different letter. Registration required.
  • Beginning Reader Book Club: January 18, 4-4:30 p.m.  Newly independent readers will practice reading out loud by working through a story together in a small group. Best suited for kindergarten-aged students. Books are available to borrow in advance in the Children’s Room. Please register.

WEDNESDAYS

  • Mother Goose on the Loose: January 12, 19, 26, 9:45-10:15 a.m. or 10:30-11 a.m. An early literacy program for children ages birth-2 years. Sing, rhyme and bounce along with musical instruments, puppets, and other props. Registration required.
  • Graphic Novel Book Club: January 19, 6-7 p.m. Read a graphic novel each month then come to the meeting to discuss it and make a craft or play a game. This program is for kids in grades 3-5. Parents and caregivers for those younger than 10 must remain on the library premises while their children participate in this independent book club. Books will be available to check out in advance in the Children’s Room. Registration is required.

THURSDAYS

  • Music Mashup: January 6, 13, 20, 27, 10-10:30 a.m.  Designed for children ages 2 through 5. Instruments, scarves, and other toys will be used while we read, dance to music and make some noise. Registration is required.

FRIDAYS

  • Toddler Time: January 7, 14, 21, 28, 10-10:30 a.m. This story time is filled with age- and developmentally-appropriate stories, songs, movement activities, and fingerplay. For children ages 2 and 3 years old with a favorite adult! No registration required.

SATURDAYS

  • Crafternoon Kits: January 8, 15, 22, 29, 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Drop by the library Children’s Room every Saturday to pick up the materials for a fun new art project. Kits are available for pick up from 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Saturdays while supplies last.
  • Stories, Songs & Stretches: January 8, 10-10:30 a.m. Kids and their parents or caregivers are invited to play together through stories, songs and yoga shapes. No experience necessary. Best suited for families with children ages 4-7. Registration required.
  • Color Me A Story: January 15, 10-10:30 a.m. Drop in for a quick story and color a themed coloring page. For families with children ages 2 through 6. Registration is required.
  • STEAM Storytime: January 22, 10-10:30 a.m. Drop in for stories on a STEAM topic followed by a simple extension activity. For families with children ages 4-6. Registration required.
