May kids’ programs at the library announced

The Northborough Library Children’s Department has announced it’s programming for May 2023. The schedule continues to bring favorites and new programs and events. Online registration is required for some programs. Follow the Library on Facebook and Instagram. SPECIAL PROGRAMS

  • Crafternoon: Mindful Breathing Bracelet: May 1; 3-6 p.m. Drop in to create a unique bracelet designed to support mindful breathing techniques. All supplies are provided. No registration needed. Best suited for elementary aged students.
  • May the 4th Fruit Sabers: Thursday, May 4; 4-4:30 p.m. Celebrate May the 4th AND Wellness Week with this healthy, fun fruit saber snack. Create your own fruit “light sabers” from a variety of fresh produce and enjoy. All supplies are provided. Please register.
  • The Reptile Nook: Tuesday, May 9 (no school day); 1-2 p.m. Learn about the amazing world of reptiles from the experienced educators at The Reptile Nook in Agawam. Join us for an hour of fascinating facts, Q&A, and get up close and personal with some of their scaly friends. For kids in grades K-5 with their families. Registration required.
  • ‘Grand-Friends’ Music Show – All Ages Event: Friday, May 12, 10-10:45 a.m. Join mother/daughter musical duo the Silvias for a show chock full of classic songs that ‘grand friends’ will recognize and children will love. Tons of audience participation is encouraged through play, music, and dance. This is a multigenerational event and all are welcome to join in the fun – from age 1 to 101! Registration is requested. Funded in part by the Northborough Cultural Council

MONDAYS

  • Graphic Novel Bookclub: May 1; 6:30-7:30 p.m. Read a graphic novel each month and then attend the meeting to discuss it and make a craft or play a game. For kids in grades 3-5. Books are chosen the month before by club members and will be available to borrow in advance at the children’s desk. Please register.
  • Beginning Reader Book Club: May 8; 4:30-5:15 p.m. Perfect for children just learning to read. Read a book aloud together, followed by a fun art project. This month’s book is Come back Ben by Ann and John Hassett. Registration is required.
  • Lego Club: May 15; 4:30-5:30 p.m. Join us for our new and improved LEGO club. Geared to kids in grades K-5, we will have an exciting theme or building challenge each month. Creations will be kept in the library special display cases. Please register.

TUESDAYS

  • Music Mashup: May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; 10-10:30 a.m.  An interactive program developed for families with children ages 2-5. Instruments, scarves, and other manipulatives will be used while reading, dancing to music and making noise.
  • Young Scientists: May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; 1-2 p.m. Six week STEM series facilitated by STEM Beginnings for children ages 3-6 with a parent/caregiver. Learn STEM concepts through hands-on activities, a story, and simple experiments. Please register.
  • Craft Corner: May 2; 4:30-5:30 p.m. Create a nature body scrub in honor of Wellness Week. Designed for kids in grades 3-5. Please register.

WEDNESDAYS

  • Read to Finnagan: May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; 3:30-4:15 p.m. Sign up to read to our very special “read” dog. Finnegan is trained to sit with your child and listen to them read. This kind of support from lovable pups can foster your child’s self-confidence, build reading skills and it’s just plain fun. Sign up for a 15-minute time slot on the events page.
  • Mother Goose on the Loose: May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; 9:45-10:15 a.m. or 10:30-11 a.m. A special storytime for our littlest patrons. This is an early literacy program that supports your child’s development through story, song, rhyme, movement, and more. This program is best suited for children ages birth-2 years old with a favorite adult. No registration required.
  • NOBO Kids Book Club: May 17; 6:30-7:15 p.m. Calling all first and second graders for NOBO Kids book club. Each month we will introduce an exciting book series. We will read the first chapter or two aloud, then discuss what we’ve read and do a fun craft or activity together. Copies of the book will be available for checkout after the meeting. Please register.

THURSDAYS

  • Preschool Story Time: May 4, 11, 18, 15; 10-10:30 a.m. or 1-1:30 p.m. A storytime with a little independence. Preschoolers ages 4-5 are invited to join Ms. Lindsay for some stories and a fun craft or activity. Grown-ups remain outside of our program for this special storytime. No registration required.

FRIDAYS

  • Toddler Time: May 5, 19, 26; 10-10:30 a.m. This story time is filled with age- and developmentally-appropriate stories, songs, movement activities, and fingerplay. For children ages 2 and 3 years old with a favorite adult! No registration required.
  • Toddler Zone Playtime. May 5, 12, 19, 26; 10:30-11:30 a.m. Head over to the Room of Requirement after Toddler Time, because it’s time to play. The room’s door will be closed and special toys brought out for use only during this time. No registration required. Families with toddler aged children (1-3) are welcome.
  • Chess Club. May 12, 26; 3:45-4:45 p.m. Elementary-aged kids are invited to learn chess basics and useful strategies from local teen pros and challenge their friends to play in a relaxed environment. Club meets every other week; please register.

SATURDAYS

  • 5 Senses Storytime. May 6; 10-10:30 a.m. Explore one of the five senses with stories and a process art activity. For families with children ages 3-6. Registration requested.
  • Shake, Rattle & Read: May 13; 10-10:30 a.m. Come for some singing, movement, and reading fun in this active storytime. Best for ages 2-5. No registration required.
  • Crafternoon Kits: May 20; 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Drop by the library to pick up the materials for a fun new art project. Kits are available while supplies last. Sponsored by the Northboro Junior Woman’s Club.
  • Stories, Songs & Stretches: May 20; 10-10:30 a.m. Kids and their parents or caregivers are invited to play together through stories, songs and yoga shapes. No experience necessary! Best suited to families with kids ages 4-7. Registration required.
