Rec Department unified sports needs participants, coaches and volunteers

Northborough Recreation is beginning a new journey with the Special Olympics.  Currently, an adult walking group, unified basketball and soccer are offered.  Coaches, volunteers and participants are needed.

Unified is open to all people, both with or without intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD), in grades 2- 8.

Teammates who genuinely want to support each others growth as they develop social and athletic skills together are needed. The program is open to all kids including non-residents.

There is no cost for participants due to the long-standing generosity of the Fydrich Foundation.

Registration is required. Please indicate if your child is an “athlete” – a person with an IDD or “partner” – a person without an IDD. This will ensure teams are balanced.

Each season runs 6 weeks, with weekly practices and the possibility of competing against other towns. The formation of teams depends on the number of athletes available in each age group.

Unified Basketball for players ages 7-13 or volunteer partners ages 11-60. Tuesdays, Jan. 10 – Feb. 14, 6-7 p.m. Will be held at 512 Forest St, Marlborough MA.

After registering on-line with the Recreation Department, you must complete the Special Olympics’ on-line Communicable Disease Waiver and the Athlete or Volunteer application form. Completed forms must be returned to the Northborough Recreation Department office through email or dropped off at the Town Hall. The Athlete and Volunteer application forms are valid for 3 years or until the volunteer turns 18.
