The Town of Northborough Scholarship Committee is holding an athletic shoe drive fundraiser
through Friday, November 1. This unique fundraising program asks the community to reach into
closets, not pockets.
GotSneakers, a social enterprise, will issue funds based on the quality of gently worn, used and
new sneakers collected.
The sneaker recycling program helps keep sneakers out of landfills, which has harmful effects
on the environment. The EPA estimates that 200-300 million pairs of shoes are thrown into
landfills each year.
Donate your running, basketball, gym and training, cleats (rubber only), hiking and casual
sneakers. There are five drop off locations with collection bins in place:
PR Running, 18 Lyman Street, Westborough
HOTWORX, 318 Main Street, Northborough
147 Davis Street, Northborough
118 Washburn Street, Northborough
43 Ridge Road, Northborough (bin by front door)
The Northborough Scholarship Committee is a town committee that provides Northborough high
school seniors with the opportunity for some financial assistance for their post-secondary
education. Fundraising efforts, such as this, help make scholarship awards possible. In May
2024, a total of $5,000 was awarded to six Northborough high school graduates.
Last year’s effort collected 33 bags of sneakers, raising $350. The sustainability impact was
significant: 455 pairs of sneakers were kept out of landfills, 13,650 pounds of carbon dioxide
emissions were prevented, and 1,026,935 gallons of water were saved.
