Town of Northborough Scholarship recipients named

Seven Town of Northborough Scholarship recipients were publicly congratulated during the June 12 Select Board meeting. A total of $3,300 was awarded this year to these Northborough high school graduates.

The recipients were

  • Muhammed Sall, Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School
  • James Benestad, St. John’s High School
  • Allison Silva, Algonquin Regional High School
  • Julia Galas, Algonquin Regional High School
  • Gabriel Gomes, Algonquin Regional High School
  • Marianna LoRusso, Algonquin Regional High School
  • Isabelle McNulty, Algonquin Regional High School

The recipients were chosen from around 30 applicants.

Committee Chair Liz Nolan said it was not an easy decision for the Committee, but one that was based on the applicant’s

  • community service and work experiences
  • school activities as well as activities outside of school and what they learned from those experiences
  • academic standing
  • financial need
  • response to the essay question “How has Northborough influenced you to become a better person?”

The scholarship fund relies solely on the generosity of the community as it does not receive any money from the town budget. The number of scholarships and the amount awarded are decided each year by the Committee based on available funds.

“The Committee continues to brainstorm new ways to fundraise, make improvements to the process, and bring more awareness to the Scholarship Fund,” said Nolan.

Nolan credited the fundraising success to Jennifer MacNeil Photography who held a mini photo shoot last fall, and to the sale of Algonquin graduation yard signs with the assistance of local printer HB Printing.

“Thank you to all who donated online and participated in fundraisers to help these students continue their education,” said Nolan. “We have a hard working Committee. Each year, we hope to grow the fund and be able to increase the awards.”
